In 1972, Yamaha began development on a line of Enduro models designed and engineered with durability and quality to withstand extremely demanding use and conditions. The first Enduro model to emerge was named the 'E8,' and it was soon followed by the E15, E25, E40 and E48.

In 1981, Yamaha began develop on a leisure line of outboards, and by 1983, the Yamaha outboard lineup in the United States grew to 12 2-stroke outboard models ranging from 40hp to 220hp.

The 1998 100hp F100A offered the highest horsepower and environmental performance in its class, followed by the ground breaking 225hp F225A, at that time the highest horsepower rated 4-stroke outboard in the world.
